Fantastic SUP river tours – adventure, relaxation & fun

The waterway network in Germany is large and many federal waterways, rivers and lakes, which are hardly used by cargo ships today, are a true paradise for planned SUP river tours. The recreational use of the byways is becoming increasingly popular, because from the water one gains a completely new perspective on numerous sights and natural phenomena. Whether it’s a SUP river tour lasting several hours, a day trip or a water walk over the whole weekend, in this post we reveal our favourite routes with some guaranteed highlights, plenty of peace and quiet on the water and attractive rest stops on land. Beforehand you will be given a checklist so that you are well equipped for your SUP river tour.

Tip: If you are planning a SUP river tour lasting several days, a touring board is the best companion. The generous surface offers not only enough space for you and your luggage, the SUP also has significantly better gliding properties, so you need less power for paddling. On longer tours, that’s exactly what can make the difference.

This belongs on the board during a river tour with the SUP

On a SUP river trip, less is always more, but in general, the most important things should always be on board. No matter what you end up taking, make sure the gear is stowed waterproof in drybags. This keeps everything dry and in place with the help of the rubbers on the SUP in case of rain or running rapids. The SUP bags are available in different sizes.

This is what you should take with you on a SUP river trip:

  • 30-40 litre drybag
  • A change of clothes
  • Shoes
  • Headwear
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bag and sleeping mat
  • Pillow
  • First aid kit and repair kit
  • small gas stove and fire
  • Pot with lid
  • Cutlery
  • durable food, snacks like muesli bars and sufficient liquid/sports drinks
  • Hygiene products
  • Tweezers
  • Water protection cover for the smartphone
  • Powerbank
  • Sun and insect protection
  • Sunglasses
  • Life jacket
  • distress flares or emergency whistle

The list is for your inspiration. If you’re only planning a SUP river trip of several hours, you obviously don’t need a tent or a gas stove. Therefore simply adapt the list to your individual requirements.

The most beautiful waters, lakes and co. for river tours with the SUP

Across Germany there are a lot of fantastic destinations for SUP river tours. Below we present some of the river tours you can try out with your SUP. Have fun exploring!

The Eibsee in Bavaria

Nine kilometres from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and in the immediate vicinity of the impressive Zugspitze lies the Eibsee, known as probably the most beautiful lake in the Alps. The crystal clear water in combination with the mountain panorama leaves nothing to be desired for a SUP tour in a class of its own. The Untersee in particular is made for paddling, and exploring the eight small islands on the north side should also be on your SUP river tour list. If you start your adventure early in the morning, you can look forward to many quiet hours with your SUP in this unique nature.

SUP river tour on the Lahn

The Lahn is a tributary of the famous Rhine and is considered by many canoeists and SUP paddlers to be the most beautiful hiking river in Germany. Around 245 kilometres await you, so you can plan a fantastic SUP river tour here. Also noteworthy are the many sights you paddle past. A clear recommendation for everyone who wants to get more highlights besides nature.

SUP Tour in the City

How about a SUP river tour through the city? The Müggelspree in Berlin, for example, is ideal for this, as it runs through some of the most beautiful areas of the capital and is therefore rightly called “New Venice”. Equally interesting is a SUP river tour starting at the city harbour of Leipzig along the Karl-Heine-Canal along numerous villas, buildings from the Wilhelminian period and natural oases. The great thing about such a City SUP river tour is that you can really enjoy yourself afterwards in one of the restaurants or cafés in the city. In Leipzig, that would probably be a traditional Leipziger Lerchen – a sweet tartlet temptation made of shortcrust pastry and marzipan served with vanilla sauce.

Beautiful SUP trip to the Bleiloch dam

We have one last SUP river tour for you. The Bleilochtalsperre is the perfect place for SUP paddlers who want to relax surrounded by beautiful nature. The lake is nestled between hills and forests in Thuringia and is a popular recreational area. If you want entertainment during your tour, the second weekend in August is a good time. Here, on the eastern shore, the festival “SonneMondSterne” has traditionally taken place since 1997.
